Becoming a Citizen After Removal of Conditions

How do you become a U.S. citizen after the removal of conditions on your green card?

Here’s a simple guide to help you understand the process.

Step 1: Remove Conditions on Your Green Card

First, if you have a conditional green card, you need to remove those conditions. This often applies to people who received their green card through marriage or investment. This step turns your 2-year green card into a 10-year green card, making you a permanent resident.

Step 2: Meet Residency Requirements

To apply for citizenship, you need to be a permanent resident for a certain time. If you’re married to a U.S. citizen, you can apply after 3 years. If not, the requirement is 5 years. During this time, you must live in the U.S. continuously and be physically present for at least half of those years.

Step 3: Demonstrate Good Moral Character

You should show good moral character during your residency period. This means following the law and fulfilling your responsibilities as a resident.

Step 4: Prepare for the Citizenship Test

You’ll need basic English skills and knowledge of U.S. history and government. Here are many resources available to help you study.

Step 5: Apply for Naturalization

When you’re ready, you can apply for naturalization. You’ll also need to provide documents, attend a biometrics appointment, and have an interview. If your application is approved, you’ll attend a naturalization ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance. After this, you’ll receive your Certificate of Naturalization, making you a U.S. citizen.

Becoming a U.S. citizen is a significant milestone.
