I Lost My Green Card! What Do I Do?

Losing a Green Card can happen for many reasons; from misplacing it to being robbed off your wallet, it can happen. Today we share with you the appropiate steps you should take to handle this situation:

Report the loss: As soon as you realize that your green card is missing, report it to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You can do this by filing Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. You can find this form on the USCIS website.

Gather necessary documents: When completing Form I-90, you will need to provide specific information about yourself, your immigration status, and details about your lost green card. Make sure to have any required supporting documents ready, such as identification, passport, or any other relevant paperwork.

Keep a copy: Make a copy of your completed Form I-90 and any supporting documents for your records before submitting the application.

Pay the fee: There is a fee associated with filing Form I-90. The fee amount may vary, so check the USCIS website for the most up-to-date information.

Submit the application: Mail your completed Form I-90, along with the required fee and supporting documents, to the address specified on the form or the USCIS website.

Follow up: After submitting the application, you should receive a receipt notice from USCIS confirming they have received your application. This notice will include a receipt number that you can use to check the status of your application.

Obtain a travel document (if needed): If you have plans to travel outside of the United States while your green card is being replaced, you may need to apply for a travel document (Form I-131, Application for Travel Document) to re-enter the country. This will be essential, as you won’t be able to re-enter the U.S. without a valid travel document or green card.

Keep a copy of the receipt: Once your application is submitted, keep a copy of the receipt notice as proof that you’ve taken the necessary steps to replace your lost green card.

Remember, the process of obtaining a replacement green card may take some time, so it’s crucial to act promptly. If you have any doubts or questions during this process, it’s best to consult with an immigration attorney or reach out to USCIS for assistance.
